“Today, the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office family mourns the untimely passing of Court Security Deputy Travis Cox, who died at his home Thursday afternoon, apparently of natural causes, at age 31,” Sheriff Ken J. Mascara said today.
“Our sympathies are with his widow, Susan, family and friends,” Sheriff Mascara said.
Because Deputy Cox lived in the City of Port St. Lucie, the Port St. Lucie Police Department is conducting the official investigation.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.
Deputy Cox passed away during an afternoon nap at his home after mowing the lawn Thursday. He had taken the afternoon off to do household chores.
“Deputy Cox joined the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office as a Detention Deputy Aug. 21, 2000,” Sheriff Mascara said. “After two years, he transferred to the Court Security Unit, which was his current assignment.”
Deputy Cox was known for his professionalism, interpersonal skills and friendliness.
His first Sheriff's Office supervisor wrote of Deputy Cox in his initial performance evaluation that he “has shown positive and effective work habits” and “great interpersonal skills.”
Subsequent evaluations included these characterizations of Deputy Cox and his work: “self initiation is commendable…a hard working and dedicated employee” and “professional at all times.”
His final assignment was the satellite St. Lucie County Courthouse on Seventh Street, Fort Pierce.
The head of the Court Security Unit, Lt. Doug Hardie, wrote of Deputy Cox in nominating him for 2007 Deputy of the Year: “Deputy Cox’s…enthusiasm allow(s) him to make lasting relationships with his co-workers and staff. He takes a proactive approach with his assignment and tries to look ahead to approach problems before they occur.”
