St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara announces arrest of suspect in armed robbery of T.D. Bank in St. Lucie County
St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara is announcing the arrest of an armed bank robbery suspect.
According to Sheriff Mascara the T.D. Bank located at 5053 Turnpike Feeder Road in the Lakewood Park Area of Northern St. Lucie County was robbed shortly before 1:00 P.M. this afternoon.
Sheriff Mascara stated, “A lone suspect entered the bank and displayed a shotgun to the teller. The Teller complied with the suspects demands and the suspect fled the bank with an undetermined amount of cash.”
Witnesses at the scene were able to provide 911 dispatchers with a detailed description of both the suspect and the getaway vehicle used in the robbery. Deputies quickly converged on the area and the suspect vehicle was spotted by deputies heading southbound on Kings Highway. St. Lucie County Sheriff’s deputies conducted a traffic stop in the area of Kings Highway and St. Lucie Boulevard where the suspect was arrested and taken into custody with out further incident.
Sheriff Mascara said, “This was great work by our deputies who responded quickly to the area. They used the information provided by witnesses at the scene and were able to quickly apprehend the suspect in a matter of minutes following the bank robbery.
The suspect was identified as John A. Dougherty, 73 of Ft. Pierce. He was arrested at the scene and following the investigation he was taken to the St. Lucie County jail.
