Six-year-old girl in guarded condition in West Palm Beach hospital after near-drowning according to St. Lucie County Sheriff Mascara
Janiya Ware, age 6, is awake and in guarded condition (9 p.m.) at a West Palm Beach hospital following a near-drowning earlier tonight, according to St. Lucie County Ken J. Mascara.
The incident took place at 4056 Greenwood Drive in unincorporated St. Lucie County north of Edwards Road and west of Sunrise Boulevard.
That is the home of Ronald Smith, whose adult granddaughter, Mikedescha Stewart, was visiting the home with several children, including Janiya Ware. Ms. Stewart is dating her uncle who was not at the home at the time of the incident.
Around 6:15 p.m., the child was discovered missing. One of the children felt the child with his feet at the bottom of the murky water in the pool, at a depth of about five feet.
Stewart jumped into the pool and rescued the child. Ronald Smith administered CPR until St. Lucie County Fire-Rescue paramedics arrived and took her to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center and Heart Institute.
From there, she was airlifted to St. Mary's Hospital in West Palm Beach.
