Complaince with laws against selling alcohol to minors falls to 71 percent in St. Lucie County, according to Sheriff Mascara
A Wednesday night undercover operation testing St. Lucie County store clerks' compliance with state laws prohibiting sales of alcoholic beverages to those under 21 yielded disappointing results, according to Sheriff Ken J. Mascara.
"Only 71 percent of stores we visited were in compliance," Sheriff Mascara said. "That is significantly lower than the 83 percent compliance rate we found last October in our previous undercover operation."
Deputies teamed with volunteers age 18 or 19 from the Indian River State College police academy in the operation. Four teams visited 41 stores, with 29 complying with state laws.
Violators were charged with a second-degree misdemeanor and given a notice to appear in court to face the charge.
Also on Wednesday night, another team visited stores and tested compliance with the state ban on tobacco sales to those under 18. Under-age volunteers for that team came from the ranks of St. Lucie County Sheriff's Explorer Post 400.
"The tobacco compliance numbers were also disappointing," Sheriff Mascara said. Of the 11 stores we visited, eight were in compliance for a rate of 72 percent.
"I want to urge management of businesses where alcohol and tobacco products are sold to strictly enforce state law," said Sheriff Mascara. "I want the parents and business people in St. Lucie County to know that we take enforcement of these laws seriously. That's why we report the violators to the state agency that licenses sales of these products — the Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco of the Florida Deparetment of Business and Professional Regulatlion. If a pattern of violations occurs, there can be consequences for the license holders."
