St. Lucie Deputies look for missing swimmer at Avalon Beach
St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Deputies are searching at this hour for a missing swimmer on North Beach. According to Sheriff Ken Mascara, deputies received an emergency call at 12:09pm today reporting a man missing in the ocean at Avalon Beach located at 5290 N. A1A in Ft. Pierce.
According to the caller, he and Surendra Sri Thakur were swimming in the ocean and got caught in a rip current. An unidentified surfer noticed the two were in distress and paddled to their location to help. The surfer was able to rescue one swimmer, but when she returned to the area to help Sri Thakur, she could not locate him.
Sheriff Mascara said deputies, assisted by St. Lucie County Lifeguards, U.S. Coast Guard and the Department of Environmental Protection have spent the afternoon searching by air and sea for Sri Thakur, but he has not been located. He is visiting local family for the holidays, but lives in Alberta, Canada. He is twenty sixyears old, 5’7” tall, has short black hair and brown eyes and is of Eastern Indian dissent. He was last seen wearing a black swimsuit and no shirt. Anyone with any information about this case is asked to call 9-1-1, or the Emergency Operations Center at 772-465-5770.
