St. Lucie County Sheriff Mascara honors local clergy at appreciation luncheon
St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken J. Mascara Thursday thanked more than 200 members of the local clergy for participating in the spiritual life of county jail inmates.
The occasion was the annual Sheriff's Office's clergy appreciation luncheon, which took place at Westside Baptist Church, hosted by Dr. Dale Ingersoll, pastor of the church.
"It is gratifying to see so many committed members of the local clergy and volunteers sharing our vision to support a vigorous jail ministry," Sheriff Mascara said. "The Sheriff’s Office benefits from the volunteer work of these individuals and churches that make a difference in the lives of those who are incarcerated. It is because of them that we are able to continue these programs and to do so effectively and efficiently."
What started nine years ago in the jail chapel with a small group of 20 clergy members has grown to more than 200 clergy members and volunteers participating in the jail's program of ministering to inmates under the direction of David Thompson, chaplain of the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office..
At the luncheon, Sheriff Mascara acknowledged the religious leaders and volunteers who assist the Sheriff’s Office’s Department of Detention with religious programs, individual counseling, and the Re-Entry Program that assists inmate in making the transition to living productive lives following their confinement.
At the luncheon, Common Ground Vineyard Church worship leader Ashley Smith along with J.J. Kendall, an acoustical guitarist, provided the music, with accompaniment by Dwight Havener, a pianist and keyboard artist who works with the Manna of Relief program.
The Sheriff’s jail food service provider, Aramark, and jail inmates enrolled in the jail’s culinary arts program prepared and served the meal.
The culinary program prepares carefully selected jail inmates for careers in the food service industry through carefully supervised training at the jail by Aramark employees.
