Vacationing NJ lifeguard saves Fort Pierce man from drowning Saturday in northern St. Lucie County, according to Sheriff Ken J. Mascara
Vacationing New Jersey lifeguard Rick Zanes saved a Fort Pierce man from drowning Saturday, according to St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken J. Mascara.
"Mr. Zanes, who is staying at Tropical Isles in Fort Pierce, spotted Arroldo Sontay, of Fort Pierce, floating face down in the ocean off Pepper Park, North A1A, St. Lucie County," Sheriff Mascara said. A riptide was carrying Mr. Sontay out to sea.
"Mr. Zanes ran into the water, got county lifeguard Morgan Harmon's attention, and swam out to the victim, holding him face up until lifeguards could bring him back to shore," said Sheriff Mascara.
"Lifeguard Harmon began efforts to resuscitate Mr. Sontay, who slowly gained consciousness and coughed up sea water. County fire-rescue EMTs took Mr. Sontay to the hospital to make sure he was alright.
"We thank Mr. Zanes for his life saving work here in St. Lucie County," Sheriff Mascara said.
