Here is a statement from St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken J. Mascara regarding the arrest this morning of 18-year-old Derrick Culver for the attempted murder of 19-year-old Michael Rakestraw, last Thursday night

ON THURSDAY DECEMBER 2, 2010 AT APPROXIMATELY 8 P.M., RAYMOND MICHEAL RAKESTRAW, A 19-YEAR-OLD WHITE MALE FROM PORT ST. LUCIE, WAS FOUND ON THE SHOULDER OF THE 34OO BLOCK OF AVENUE Q IN FORT PIERCE WITH MUTIPLE GUNSHOT WOUNDS.

THE MOST EVIDENT GUNSHOT WOUND TO MR. RAKESTRAW WAS TO HIS FACE. THE OTHERS WERE TO HIS CHEST, STOMACH AND WRIST. AS YOU CAN IMAGINE, AT THE TIME INITIAL RESPONDING DEPUTIES FOUND HIM, HE WAS GRAVELY CRITICAL BUT STILL CONSCIOUS.

ALTHOUGH CONSCIOUS, BECAUSE OF THE GUNSHOT WOUND TO HIS FACE, THE VICTIM COULD NOT TALK. INITIAL RESPONDING DEPUTIES TOOK THE INITIATIVE TO COMMUNICATE WITH HIM THROUGH A SERIOUS OF QUESTIONS IN WHICH THE DEPUTY ASKED HIM QUESTIONS AND THE VICTIM WOULD NOD HIS HEAD UP AND DOWN AS AN AFFIRMATIVE OR SIDEWAYS AS A NEGATIVE.

THE INITIAL DEPUTY ASKED THE VICTIM IF HE KNEW HIS ASSAILANT, AND HE REPLIED WITH AN AFFIRMATIVE. THE DEPUTY WENT ON FURTHER TO RECITE THE ALPHABET IN AN ATTEMPT TO SPELL THE ASSAILANT'S INITIALS WHICH WERE D.C. FURTHER QUESTIONING REVEALED HE WAS A BLACK MALE. THE VICTIM WAS THEN TRANSPORTED TO THE HOSPITAL.

I MET THE VICTIM'S FAMILY AT THE HOSPITAL AND QUESTIONED THEM ABOUT THEIR SON'S ACTIVITIES THROUGHOUT THE DAY AND EVENING. THE VICTIM'S MOTHER CONFIRMED THAT HE DID IN FACT HAVE A FRIEND NAMED DERRICK CULVER, AGE 18, WHO LIVED IN FORT PIERCE, BUT SHE DID NOT EXPRESS A REASON FOR HER SON'S BEING WITH DERRICK CULVER THAT NIGHT.

OUR DETECTIVES HAVE WORKED TIRELESSLY ON THIS CASE SINCE THURSDAY NIGHT DEVELOPING ADDITIONAL LEADS THAT CONFIRMED DERRICK CULVER'S INVOLVEMENT IN THIS SHOOTING. AFTER THE VICTIM REGAINED CONSCIOUSNESS AFTER SURGERY, OUR DETECTIVES PRESENTED HIM WITH A PHOTO LINEUP, AND THE VICTIM POINTED TO DERRICK CULVER AS THE PERSON WHO SHOT HIM.

I AM PROUD TO REPORT THAT THIS MORNING AROUND 10 A.M., JUST SHY OF 90 HOURS SINCE THE ATTACK, DERRICK BERNARD CULVER, 18 YEARS OLD, OF 1800 NORTH 35TH STREET, FORT PIERCE, WAS ARRESTED FOR ATTEMPTED FIRST-DEGREE MURDER. THE PENALTY FOR THIS CRIME IS 25 YEARS TO LIFE.

AT THIS TIME, THE VICTIM, RAYMOND MICHAEL RAKESTRAW REMAINS IN GUARDED/CRITICAL CONDITION. IF HE SHOULD DIE AS A RESULT OF HIS INJURIES, THE CHARGE WILL THEN BE FIRST-DEGREE MURDER.

OUR DEPUTIES AND DETECTIVES WORKED TIRELESSLY ON THIS CASE, AND I ALSO WANT TO EXPRESS OUR APPRECIATION TO THE 19TH JUDICIAL STATE ATTORNEY'S OFFICE AND THE US MARSHALS SERVICE FOR THEIR ASSISTANCE IN OUR INVESTIGATION AS WELL AS NUMEROUS RESIDENTS IN THE AREA OF THE SHOOTING WHO OFFERED ASSISTANCE AND IN SOLVING THIS HENIOUS CRIME.
