I-95 traffic slowed in St. Lucie County at St. Lucie West-to-PGA overpass due to tractor trailer fire, according to Sheriff Ken J. Mascara
An early morning tractor trailer fire to a load of tires has closed the St. Lucie West overpass bridge at the 121 mile marker of I-95, according to St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken J. Mascara.
St. Lucie County Sheriff’s deputies are directing motorists who want to go north on I-95 from St. Lucie West Boulevard up the northbound ramp, then down the ramp to bypass the bridge. This will cause traffic near the detour to be slower than normal.
Motorists on I-95 who want to go to St. Lucie West or PGA must leave I-95 one mile south of St. Lucie West Boulevard at the Crosstown Parkway.
Motorists in PGA who want to get to I-95 must travel to Glades Cutoff Road, go south on Glades Cutoff Road to Midway Road where they will turn right (west) to enter I-95 north bound or south bound.
The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the incident which involved a truck driver who blew a tire and pulled under the overpass bridge onto the shoulder, Sheriff Mascara said. The entire trailer load of tires caught fire, damaging the bridge when the heat from the fire caused some concrete to fall from the bridge.
It is expected that the bridge will be closed all day until Florida Department of Transportation engineers can examine the bridge and determine if it structurally sound.
The St. Lucie County Fire Department was called to the scene at 3:02 this morning to fight the fire. * * *
