Crime Stoppers tip leads to arrest of copper wire thieves, St. Lucie Co. Sheriff Mascara announces
Sheriff Mascara announced today that on Friday, December 18, 2009, detectives arrested two persons for almost two dozen copper wire thefts.
Arrested were Willie Hunter, 40, of 404 N. 30th Street, Fort Pierce, Florida and Stanford Hunter, 31, of 2365 SW Old St. Aug Road, Madison, Florida.
Sheriff Mascara advised that deputies took over 23 copper theft reports between October 6, 2009 and December 3, 2009. The thefts took place out west of I-95 in St. Lucie County. Detectives received information through Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers which led to the apprehension of both Hunters. Once the Hunters were taken into custody, they both confessed to all the thefts of copper which took place west of I-95. Once the Hunters stole the copper wire, they would take the wire to local scrap metal recycling centers. The Hunters received in access of $4,400.00 dollars from the sale of their stolen copper wire from local metal recycling centers.
Both Hunters were charged by detectives with 29 counts of Felony Grand Theft, 9 counts of Felony Dealing in Stolen Property, and 9 counts of Felony Giving False Information to Verify Ownership. Both are being held in the St. Lucie County Jail. Stanford Hunter’s bond is $780,000.00 dollars and Willie Hunter’s bond is $185,000.00 dollars.
Sheriff Mascara credits the public with providing the tip to Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers. Sheriff Mascara said, “Crime Stoppers has proven to be a valuable tool to assist law enforcement with solving crimes and capturing fugitives. These individuals were on a copper wire crime wave and we are glad that this has come to a conclusion.”
