More than one-third of St. Lucie County bars, liquor stores and convenience stores flunk St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office alcohol sales compliance checks

Of the 92 attempts  by underage, undercover personnel to buy alcoholic beverages at St. Lucie County bars, restaurants, liquor stores, convenience stores and grocery Thursday night, 32 — or 35 percent — resulted in the sale of alcohol to minors, according to St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken J. Mascara.

“Our School Resource Deputy Section, with help of underage volunteers, has been doing compliance checks for several years,” Shereiff Mascara said, “but this is the first time we expanded the operation beyond convenience stores and included drive-through beverage stores, liquor stores, grocery stores and bars.”

The operation involved eight teams who visited establishments throughout St. Lucie County to determine compliance with state liquor laws prohibiting the sale of alcoholic beverages to anyone under 21 years of age.

The 16 under-21 volunteers came from the ranks of 18-20-year-old Indian River State College criminal justice students, accompanied by undercover deputies in civilian clothes.

“The students did an outstanding job,” Sheriff Mascara said. In all, the operation involved 50 deputies and civilians, including the volunteers.

“In our previous compliance checks, that concentrated on convenience stores, non-compliance was in the 20 to 25 percent range,” said Sheriff Mascara. “But Thursday night’s more comprehensive operation showed non-compliance at a higher level, at 35 percent, which is more than one-third.”

The Sheriff thanked the two-thirds of stores and restaurants who followed state law and refused to sell to those under 21.

Violators were charged with a misdemeanor and given notices to appear in court to face the charge.
