St. Lucie County Sheriff’s deputies investigating death of man whose body was found next to a canal this morning north of Fort Pierce, according to Sheriff Mascara
St. Lucie County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating the death of a man whose body was found on the sidewalk next to Belcher Canal north of Fort Pierce at dawn, according to Sheriff Ken J. Mascara.

Someone walking in the area of North 25th Street and Avenue T found the body around 6:15 this morning and called 9-1-1.

Sheriff Mascara said the body is that of a black male in his 40s or 50s, wearing jeans, a shirt and jacket. The body was soaked, suggesting that he had been in the canal. His body was found next to a bicycle. Investigators said the man could not have been in the water for more than a few hours due to the condition of the body and witness information.

There were no obvious signs of trauma to the body, Sheriff Mascara said.

There was a wallet in the man’s jeans with identification. Detectives believe they know the identity of the man. They are trying to locate family members at this time.

It is expected that an autopsy will take place today.

Anyone with information is asked to call St. Lucie County Sheriff’s detective offices during business hours at 772-462-3230, or 9-1-1 in St. Lucie County at any time, or Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers at any time at 1-800-273-TIPS (8477.)
