Missing St. Lucie County surf shop owner located near beachside park where his truck was fund, Sheriff Mascara announces

Bruce Strunk, 56, the owner of Spunky’s Surf Shop on North A1A, St. Lucie County, has been found alive tonight about a mile south of the South A1A beachside park where his pickup truck was found earlier today, according to St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken J. Mascara.

“Mr. Strunk was found in some heavy weeds and brush east of the dune line about 9:20 this evening,” said Sheriff Mascara from South A1A where deputies located Strunk. “Our helicopter equipped with an infrared sensing device called a FLIR (‘forward looking infrared‘) located Mr. Strunk, and deputies were sent to the scene.“

Deputies sent for a St. Lucie County fire-rescue ambulance to take Strunk to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment if necessary. Details of his condition are not available at this time.

Deputies said Mr. Strunk left his surf shop, at 1403 North U.S.1, this morning to make a bank deposit around 9 this driving his 2006 blue Dodge Ram pickup truck.

He made the deposit but did not return to his business.

Friends and family members looked for him and found his truck abandoned at John Brooks Park on South Hutchinson Island, St. Lucie County. They said this was not an area Mr. Strunk was in the habit of visiting.

Family members flagged down a patrol deputy this afternoon, and the Sheriff’s Office began its investigation.

There was no evidence in his truck, business or anywhere else to indicate intent of any kind, deputies said.

Deputies searched with their Marine Unit and helicopter. Coast Guardsmen from the Fort Pierce station searched by boat and by air. All searches yielded no results until the FLIR-equipped Sheriff’s helicopter located Strunk.
