St. Lucie Sheriff’s detectives arrest four county employees for stealing scrap metal from county landfill
The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office has arrested four St. Lucie County Solid Waste employees who were stealing scrap metal from the county landfill. Here are the names of those arrested and their charges, all of which are felonies:
- Stephen J. McKeon (foreman III): organized fraud. dealing in stolen property and giving false information to a secondary metals recycler.
- Jerome Scott (heavy equipment operator): organized fraud, dealing in stolen property and giving false information to a secondary metals recycler.
- William Voehl (heavy equipment operator): organized fraud, dealing in stolen property and giving false information to a secondary metals recycler.
- Willie J. Henton (heavy equipment operator): theft and dealing in stolen property. Deputies arrested Henton Sept. 10. Deputies arrested the other three today. All four employees have been terminated from the county’s Solid Waste Department.
Sheriff Ken J. Mascara said: “St. Lucie County Solid Waste Department officials assisted and cooperated with our detectives to bring this investigation to a successful conclusion. It is unfortunate that four public servants violated the trust of the public by stealing scrap metal from the county landfill and selling it for personal gain.”
County Administrator Doug Anderson said: “Actions like this by county employees will not be tolerated. When employees are caught violating the public’s trust such as this case, we will prosecute to the fullest extent of the law.”
