Deadbeat dads -- and moms -- rounded up in

St. Lucie County Sheriff’s deputies the night of April 26 rounded up 20 deadbeat parents, including 5 deadbeat mothers in “Operation Take Responsibility,” according to Sheriff Ken J. Mascara.

“We see in law enforcement that many of the children that are neglected because of parents that fail to pay child support end up relying heavily on social services that taxpayers have to bear,” said the Sheriff, who participated in the operation that took place from 4 p.m. to 1 a.m. “By enforcing the parents’ responsibility, we in turn hope to reduce the future taxpayer burden.”

Detectives obtained the deadbeats’ addresses from the Florida Department of Revenue and verified the addresses with family members who have not received court-ordered child support payment, Sheriff Mascara said.

“Parents in St. Lucie County who fail to pay child support can expect a one-way trip to the St. Lucie County jail,” said Sheriff Mascara.
