| 1. What is the first step in applying? |
| Obtain an application from the Human Resources Unit of the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office, located at 4700 West Midway Road, Fort Pierce, FL. Applications may also be downloaded from our web site. |

| 2. Where can I register for testing and how much does it cost? |
Certified applicants (including those from out of state) for law enforcement and detention positions are not required to complete the Criminal Justice Basic Abilities Test (CJBAT). However, non-certified applicants for detention positions may register for the CJBAT at the Indian River Community College Criminal Justice Academy or another criminal justice academy in the State of Florida. To register for the test at Indian River Community College Criminal Justice Academy, please call (772)464-7676. The cost for the CJBAT is $40.00.
Certified and non-certified applicants for law enforcement and detention positions must take the Physical Agilities Test (PAT). The fee at the Indian River Community College Criminal Justice Academy is $10.00 for the PAT.
Civilian applicants without a college degree are required to complete a Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE), achieving minimum scores of 10.0 in language and reading. The TABE test is offered at the Indian River Community College, is free of cost, and can be scheduled by calling (772)462-4725. |

| 3. What scores are required on the PAT and BAT? |
| The PAT is scored on a pass/fail basis. The passing score for the CJBAT is 74%. |

| 4. How can I prepare for the CJBAT? |
| You may purchase the study guide at the Indian River Community College bookstore located at their main campus at 3209 Virginia Avenue, Fort Pierce, FL. |

| 5. Once I have the initial application packet ready, where can I submit it? |
| The initial packet that consists of passing test scores, all certified documents, court dispositions, the completed application, and completed forms from the information package may be submitted in person or via mail to the Human Resources Unit, St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office, 4700 West Midway Road, Fort Pierce, FL 34981. |

| 6. After submitting the application packet, what is the next step? |
| The selection process for detention, law enforcement, and civilian positions are detailed in the Information Packages located on our website's Careers link. The process consists of a driver license and criminal history check, pre-screen interview (detention and law enforcement positions only), oral board, background investigation, polygraph examination (detention and law enforcement positions) or voice stress test (civilian positions), psychological evaluation (detention and law enforcement positions), and a medical examination (detention and law enforcement positions). |

| 7. If I am selected for employment, what is the next step? |
Uncertified and certified detention deputies must complete the field training program at the detention facility. Uncertified detention deputies will be scheduled for an upcoming academy at Indian River Community College.
Law enforcement deputies are also required to complete a field training program. |

| 8. How long is the corrections academy? |
| The corrections academy will take sixteen weeks to complete. |
| |
| 9. Are recruits paid during the academy? |
| The St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office will pay new recruits an uncertified deputy salary while completing the corrections academy. |

| 10. Does the agency offer higher salaries for certified and/or experienced applicants? |
| Yes, the agency may offer higher salaries to these applicants. |

| 11. Do out of state certified applicants have to complete the entire academy? |
Out of state applicants may be exempt from completing the entire academy. Training records should be submitted to a Florida criminal justice academy for assessment.

| 12. Is a swim test a requirement for employment? |
| No. |

| 13. Will traffic violations and/or a driver license suspension prohibit an applicant from employment? |
| A driving history will be obtained. Applicants with five or more moving violations, and those with suspensions in the past five years, will not be considered for employment. Driver license suspension for financial responsibility will be evaluated on a case by case basis. |

| 14. Is previous drug use an automatic disqualifier for employment? |
| No. However, any illegal drug use or repeated experimentation in the last three years will be an automatic disqualifier. |

| 15. How does an applicant have copies of their documents certified to submit with the application? |
| The applicant should make copies of the original documents and then show the original documents and the copies to a witness. The witness must certify the copies by writing: "I Certify that this is a True and Correct copy of the original document." The witness MUST sign and date the statement on the copies. The applicant may bring the Original and Copies to the Human Resources Unit, St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office, 4700 West Midway Road, Fort Pierce, FL for certification. |

| Most banks and lending institutions, in addition to the Clerk of Court, will notarize documents. Members of the Sheriff's Office Human Resources Unit may also notarize this document for you. |
