David R. Thompson entered the United States Marine Corps upon his graduation from High School, serving at various locations throughout Asia and the United States. Following his tour of duty he attended the police academy at Indian River State College, graduating in 1985. While attending the police academy he served as class president and was the class honor graduate. During his career at the Saint Lucie County Sheriff’s Office he has held positions throughout the organization including Patrol, Investigations, and Administration.
David earned his Bachelors Degree of Professional Studies in 1997 from Barry University in Miami Florida and his Master of Public Administration Degree in 2001 from Troy State University in Troy Alabama. He is a February 1999 graduate of the University of Louisville Southern Police Institute Command Officers Development Course and Graduated from the prestigious FBI National Academy 230th Session in September of 2007.
David has been an adjunct faculty member of Indian River State College since 1989 and is an adjunct professor for Kaplan University. David also serves as a Lead Assessor for the Commission on Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation. In August of 2008 David was appointed as a Commissioner for the State of Florida Department of Education Educational Practices Commission.
